Texas’ scientists weigh in on global warming

In response to the state’s recent decision to challenge Environmental Protection Agency’s finding that heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide are a threat to human health, climate change scientists from UT, A&M, Texas Tech, and Rice have affirmed their confidence in the case for climate change in an op-ed piece (On global warming, the science is solid”) in the Houston Chronicle.

Governor Perry and Attorney General Greg Abbott have pursued a lawsuit to stop the new EPA rules because of their potential impact on jobs in Texas. According to the scientists’ column, the Attorney General has admitted that the state did not consult any climate scientists before putting together the state’s challenge and instead relied on British newspaper articles.

Environmental policy is at its worst on the campaign trail. George Bush warmed to the climate change cause after he was through running for the presidency. The sacrifice of environmental regulation makes for a chilling campaign message that few candidates are ready to embrace. The question is: how long can we wait for a rational debate on the subject?
