Cotton Picking in Texas

Cotton Picking in Texas

I’ve been collecting Texas postcards for about a year now. How the state presents itself to visitors both interests and amuses me. Texas has always cultivated its image and how that changes over time probably tells us a lot about who we were and what we wanted to be.

I don’t know the date of the portfolio of postcards this came from, but I think that it’s revealing that anyone thought that images of picking cotton rated a postcard image. Tourist-specific destinations didn’t seem as important at they are today and postcards often focused on the state’s economy, roadways, etc.

The fact that all of the pickers are African-American is telling today but would be taken for granted at the time. Sometimes, what is unsaid is more telling than what is said.
